It had a much larger capacity than the Municipal station in the city, opened the previous year. The East London Municipality inaugurated their electric tramway on 25 January A power station was built at Camps Bay where two kW dynamos were erected. The route over Kloof Nek is now the Camps Bay Drive and the power station has been converted into a theatre. Electric tramways were inaugurated at Durban on 1 May , Pietermaritzburg on 2 November , and Kimberley-Alexandersfontein on 22 April Horse-drawn trams were in operation in Johannesburg in Electric trams were not in operation in Johannesburg until 14 February , nearly ten years after they were running in Cape Town.
Electric trams were taken into service in Pretoria from November Up to the end of the nineteenth century the generators of all steam stations in South Africa were driven by reciprocating piston engines.
Overseas, the steam turbine was at that time proving itself far more suitable for electrical power generation. It was much more compact and the steam consumption was less. The higher speed was also a big advantage. At about the same time, there were some engineers who were convinced that the end of the steam age had arrived and that gas engines would be the prime movers of the future.
It was said that gas plant was simpler than steam and required less skilled labour. Little more than half the coal was required and less than half the amount of water of a steam plant. In the Johannesburg Town Council placed orders for three gas engines of hp each and five of hp.
These sets proved to be a most costly disaster and the whole of the plant was rejected in Steam turbines were installed instead. The building still exists in Electric Road and is presently being converted into apartments. Three kW Parsons turbo-generators were installed by the same company at the Claremont Central Station in , and the 50 kW set from Wynberg was transferred there as well.

The light was placed above the entrance to the courtyard shown here. This line was originally installed as part of the telegraph system. A telephone network was started in Cape Town with eleven sets of "microphone apparatus" in By there were doctors and others in Cape Town who had installed telephones in their private houses, and in a line was in use from the Docks to the Customs Building in Adderley Street.
The first telephone exchange in South Africa was installed at Port Elizabeth in and had 25 lines. There were 44 subscribers in Cape Town had an exchange with 50 subscribers in Pretoria had a telephone service from and Johannesburg installed an exchange in J The photo shows one of the first arc streetlights in Du Toitspan Road, Kimberley. In the Table Bay Harbour Board in Cape Town came to the conclusion that a "central station [supplying] public or other buildings by the means of transformers" would be more efficient than a number of individual lighting plants.
This led to the Harbour Board building, in , what constituted the first central power station and distribution system in South Africa. The plant installed was a horsepower [ kW] engine and dynamo with two boilers. An alternating current machine also supplied power at volts.
Of these buildings the first four still exist. In the power station was superseded by a larger station. The latter building, including the original engine room crane, still stands at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and was known as the "CD Wherehouse" in It was being used as a restaurant called the "Planet Hollywood", when a pipe bomb exploded on 25 August , killing two and injuring 26 people. An electricity reticulation system is defined as "a much more elaborate scheme than a few street lamps" in A Symphony of Power - The Eskom Story.
Although the streets of Kimberley, the Table Bay Harbour and the House of Assembly were lit by electricity in , it was to be ten years later before other municipalities introduced electric streetlights. The Cape Argus of 25 April reported that by March the "smoky old oil lamps for lighting the roads in the Rondebosch Municipality [in Cape Town] have been entirely replaced by electric incandescent lamps The Moodie Fountain The circuit of lamps is about five miles [8 km] in length".
That event was triggered by a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test on Unit 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and a subsequent fire released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment. The most-recent major accident occurred following a 9. The quake caused the Fukushima Daiichi station to lose all off-site power. Backup systems worked, but 40 minutes after the quake, a meter-high tsunami struck the area, knocking some of them out.
Three reactors eventually overheated—melting their cores to some degree—then hydrogen explosions spread radioactive contamination throughout the area. The consequences of accidents have played a role in decisions to phase out or cut back reliance on nuclear power in some countries.
Advanced reactor technology and small modular reactors also offer hope for revitalizing the industry. While humans have been harnessing energy from the sun, wind, and water for thousands of years, technology has changed significantly over the course of history, and these ancient energy types have developed into state-of-the-art innovative power generation sources. Chasing Water. What became modern renewable energy generation got its start in the late s, around the time that POWER launched.
Hydropower was first to transition to a commercial electricity generation source, and it advanced very quickly. A belt-driven dynamo powered by a water turbine at the factory lit 16 arc street lamps. By , there were 40 to 50 hydroelectric plants operating in the U. Blowing in the Wind. At about the same time that hydropower was gaining popularity, inventors were also figuring out how to use the windmills of the past to generate electricity for the future.
In , Charles Brush, an inventor in Ohio, constructed a foot wind turbine in his backyard Figure 5. Wind-powered turbines slowly and with little fanfare spread throughout the world. The American Midwest, where the turbines were used to power irrigation pumps, saw numerous installations. In , the world saw the first 1. Interest in wind power was renewed by the oil crisis of the s, which spurred research and development. Wind power in the U. By the s, the first utility-scale wind farms began popping up in California.
Europe has been the leader in offshore wind, with the first offshore wind farm installed in in Denmark. According to Wind Europe, Europe currently has In late , the first offshore wind farm in the U. Let the Sunshine In. Compared to other commercially available renewable energy sources, solar power is in its infancy, though the path that led to its commercial use began almost years ago.
In , French scientist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic PV effect by experimenting with an electrolytic cell made of two metal electrodes in a conducting solution. Becquerel found that electricity generation increased when it was exposed to light. By the mid 19th century, electricity had been harnessed on a small scale. Why did it take the rest of the century to realise its potential for wide public use? Electrical engineer John Biscoe's article explores the development of the public supply of electricity in this country, beginning where Michael Faraday left off and taking the story up to the present day.
For a year-by-year account of the development of public supply in the UK, see electrical timeline. In the command of electricity , we saw how electricity in one form or another has always been around but that it had pretty well no practical purpose. Key discoveries in the 19th century changed this, and set us on the path to the widespread public supply we now draw from every day. Even though electricity had been used for communications from the late s onwards see electrical timeline , such use only required the comparatively low power produced by electric batteries.
There were other occasional applications, such as the use of a carbon arc as the light source for lighthouses for which Michael Faraday supervised the use of his principle of magneto-electric generation and the lighting of public buildings using batteries.
There are a number of good reasons for this apparent delay. The scaling-up for practical purposes of scientific discoveries made in the laboratory was notoriously difficult. Furthermore, in steam engines, gas lighting and coal fires there already existed satisfactory methods of providing power, light and heat.
It was clear from early on that the investment and infrastructure required for an electrical industry would make electricity a very costly commodity compared with the other well-established technologies. Indeed once it did start, progress was slow.
However, in the late 19th century the components needed for electrification began to be developed. This invention did away with the necessity for the carbon arc which had always been difficult to control. This argument was never fully resolved and resulted the supply of both AC and DC current up until the middle of the 20th century.
But progress was slow. Most Americans still lit their homes with gas light and candles for another fifty years. Only in did half of all homes in the U. Back to For Kids Phonograph.
