Usually because I find it to be more classy in the way that it presents itself. I'm a lesbian, and there are lots of ways that I relate with Yuri. Now I don't dislike Yaoi because I'm a lesbian, it's because of, you guessed it, the fandom. Honestly, I don't mind Yaoi at all, but Yuri makes me…I don't even know how to explain it. Especially when we have authors like Nishi-Sensei Nishi Uko who do an amazing job at adding a sense of realism. When it comes to Yaoi, I find it to be too sexualized and cutesy to enjoy, which is also a problem with majority of Yuri admittedly, but it is definitely easier to find a realistic Yuri than say a realistic Yaoi, which I guess is most of the appeal in Yaoi for heterosexual women.

Oh you don't even know how much I can relate to this. Back when I didn't even watch anime some of my friends were really extreme with their love for yaoi. I didn't and still don't hate this genre, as I view this as something that should go hand in hand with yuri, though the way they just shoved it into my face back then, writing fanfics that they wanted me to read, drawing pictures and making me watch stuff that I simply didn't want to see… I might be extreme with my love for yuri as well, though if I see that someone is not interested, I don't do anything about it.
So yeah, having friends like this can be a problem, and I also understand what you mean when you say the fandom is similar, because that's the feeling I got as well. Though, I guess there are problems with the yuri fandom as well. I dont hate yaoi, I hate the small percentage of its fanbase who say shit like this. It appearing more, might mean that people accept it more, which then again might mean that the same applies to yuri as well. I guess if you see it like that, it really makes it clear that we should be working together….
Which is More Popular? I think the result might be a bit biased. Most MAL users are straight men. And straight men prefer yuri because lesbians are hot but gay guys are icky. Yuri is a newer genre, and has the intriguing problem of not having a unified audience, so what appeals to the straight men, straight women and lesbian may differ significantly, which splits an already niche audience up further.
For example, it seems that Utena shojo-yuri is more popular with women. But Valkyrie Drive ecchi-yuri is much more popular with men. Meanwhile yaoi is almost universally liked by straight women. At least in Japan that would be the case. It sells best to both males and females Those with sex most likely lean more to the male audience.
I have no statistic to prove this. This is just what I think. But that's the general definitions, of course there might be some manga Honto Yajuu that has both character development and tons of sex so it can be categorized as both. I swear this thread pops up every month. That's really the only difference. There is no difference, they're all genres which the characters have mental illnesses. Shounen ai - with no explicit sex scenes, yaoi - with explicit sex scenes, this is how it should work and some stuff on MAL is indeed tagged according to this, for example: in Love Stage anime there is no sex, while in the source manga there is a lot of sex.
This is really the only difference between them since the storyline is almost exactly the same in both, and they are tagged differently - the first one is shounen ai while the second one is yaoi. But not everything on MAL is tagged accurately, some tags are inconsistent and can be misleading.

But if you are using both terms then there is actually no yuri anime at all but it is possible that we will be able to see proper yuri anime in this year - Citrus and Netsuzou Trap are getting anime adaptations.
Of course a lot of yuri manga exist. But your definition is wrong.
