It may be health related, organ related, energy related, or all. Even if we do not have a definitive answer, rolling to the right simply feels wonderful! Physiological: The heart is more open and free when we roll to the right. While this is true, I doubt that this is a significant thing: I know I lie on my left side for long stretches of time at night when I sleep, and I don't feel this affects my heart in any way. Energetically, there is another explanation: the sinus reflex. If you lay on your right side you can open up the left nostril. That is in the Yin side: if you are finishing a Yang yoga practice, it is nice to balance the Yang energy in the body by opening the left nostril.
The same logic, when applied to a Yin Yoga practice, would suggest we roll to the left side after shavasana after a Yin Yoga class. That will help open the sun channel, the Yang nostril, which again will serve to balance the energies in the body. It should be noted: to activate the sinus reflex by rolling to one side or the other, you may need to stretch the lower arm out, over your head, and use it as a pillow.
It conveys a strong energy and it is linked to the analytical side of our brains. Stops and starts on the left side of the body. This is also known as the moon channel or feminine energy. It conveys a gentle energy, and calms our mind. It is linked to the creative side of our brains. So, when we turn to our right side after Shavasana, we are showing our Ida Nadi to the universe, showing our gentler and calmer sides.
While we lie on our right side, we are also using our left nostril more, which activates our Ida Nadi. Try sleeping on your right side or before bed, block off your right nostril so you are inhaling and exhaling through your left, do this for 3, 11 or 31 minutes and see if you sleep better.
