When gasoline ignites, specifically from compression and not the spark plugs, it can knock. Knocking can actually damage your engine. Regular unleaded gasoline features an octane level of Premium gas generally falls between 92 and 93 octane.
Over time, carbon deposits build up in your cylinders. This is particularly noticeable in older cars. When this occurs, a switch to premium gasoline is a good choice to help the vehicle last longer. Like we stated earlier, using premium gasoline can help to prevent engine knock.
When your piston drops into the cylinder, it compresses air and gasoline, which is then ignited by the spark plug. A knock occurs when the fuel is ignited without the help of the spark plug. This unregulated explosion can cause severe damage to your vehicle, so using a higher octane fuel is strongly recommended.
For vehicles that have a higher compression ratio, premium gas allows your vehicle to reach its potential in gas mileage. Although premium gas is more expensive, making the switch to regular in a vehicle that requires premium will see a drop in fuel efficiency. This could end up costing you more in the long run because your vehicle is burning through more fuel than usual.
Manufactures recommend premium gas because it is not untypical for higher horsepower output engines operating cylinders at higher compression ratios i. Higher octane fuels alleviate post detination or engine knock that can be detrimental to valves over a long run. I have a number of friends that lease vehicles that refuse to pay the premium cost for higher octane gas. I guess the problems if they arise are those of the after lease purchaser.
If you intend to keep the car, you would be probably wiser to use the manufacturers recommend fuel grade in order to avoid voiding the warranty should something go wrong.
I would assume that that any post detination would impact fuel economy unless the onboard engine management system can sufficiently adjust the valve timing. Of course, there wil always be others who believe this is all guff. I am new to Infiniti vehicles and new to this forum. I am awaiting the delivery of a new G37s coupe Canadian model, 2nd last one in Ontario and Quebec , black on black with dealer installed tinting. Is there any system that can be integrated with the existing radio LCD?

I highly doubt it, I made that mistake in my Nissan Maxima and it spark knocked something terrible till I could get premium in it. On a car that nice, don't risk running regular. I just purchased a G37, and the dealer told me to use regular gas unless I planned on red lining the engine and testing its performance.
I don't drive like a race car driver, so I think I'll use regular. Modern cars have knock sensors. Using regular in a high compression engine can cause knock.
The sensors should detect it and automatically compensate by retarding the spark timing. Thus, car should run fine with slightly reduced performance and mileage. G37Jason answered 5 years ago. I use 93 and i red line all the time daily driving the cars to fun not to rearwheel drive G37 is a great car. The engine in this car operates at an compression ratio normal cars run on a compression ratio , despite dual nock sensors the pre ignition will still cause problems , the nock sensors may not be able to adjust the advance enough to compensate.
